Vintage Two Wire
Ground Wire Question?
I have a vintage 1/4 inch musical instrument jack with three places to hook wires. All of the ones I have ever used only had two, the positve and negative.
I need to use it for a project but can't seem to get it grounded. I've tried soldering a short length of wire on and attaching it to metal. Is there a certain way to do this.
There are a couple of different possibilities for a 1/4" jack with three terminals:
- it may be a "TRS", tip-ring-sleeve, jack. These are commonly used for stereo headphones (tip is left, ring is right, sleeve or ground is common) and for balanced line-level connections (tip is "live", ring is "return", sleeve is ground).
- it may be a "TS", tip-sleeve jack, but with a switch. If nothing is inserted in the jack then the live or hot lug is connected to the third lug. This is commonly used for headphone jacks (plug in the phones and the speaker is cut off; the speaker is fed from the third lug) or for implemented the "normal" route in patch panels.
- it might be a simple TS jack with two ground points. (Rare)
- you can find TRS jacks with switches on both T and R. These would have *five* lugs.
If it's an open-frame jack it is pretty easy to just look at it closely and figure out which lugs go to where. If it's all enclosed, it's more difficult. A surefire way is to get a matching TRS plug, plug it into the jack, and use the ohms or continuity function of your meter to figure out which lug on the jack is going to which contact on the plug.

Which bedroom look is prettier?
So I've got an apartment for nex tyear (whooooot) instead of living in res. My issue, now, however, is bedroom furniture.
I wanted it to be cheap, of course, because I'm a student, and thus broke. And I'm only going to be at the uni for two more years. But I still want it to feel like home. I sort of like the wire-frame headboard look - a bit antiquey vintage-y.

Ikea delivers and is super cheap - thus the basis of the appeal
I absolutely love the first one. It reminds me of an iron gate I saw at Metropolitan Museum of Art during a recent NYC trip. The white one also looks vintage, but bland, and it looks like something for a little girl's room. The black one is mare mature looking.
