Trend Forecasting Question?
I'm applying for a job at a clothes store and one of the requirements for a sales associate is trend forecasting. Since I wouldn't be ordering the clothes, I thought it would mean to see what's getting popular. But then I started thinking it could mean to think of a completely new idea but why would an associate need to do that? I'm not designing or ordering the clothes. I would just dress the mannequins and set up displays. Any suggestions or inputs?
For a position in a retail clothing store to require trend forecasting skills, they basically want someone who is aware of what is currently trendy and popular and what that may evolve into. They want someone who can think on their feet in terms of putting an outfit together. For example, say your store gets a corporate directive on how they want a mannequin dressed in the window, and you have the dress and the necklace on hand, but not the scarf. Now it's up to you to figure out what would look just as good based on current trends. Another example would be when a customer asks what you would recommend to go with certain skirt, top, etc. As long as you are aware of what is popular and keep up with runway trends (which are a good indicator of what will become mainstream down the road) you should be fine.
