Pattern Making Mannequins

How would i make this dress?
Okay, I am going to make my dress for my junior year homecoming.. I found a picture of a dress online that I like [it’s off of a game site thingy, but I still like it]. I’ve been sewing for a few years and I think I can make it successfully. I found two patterns that I can combine for the top half and the skirt. I just have one dilemma.. I have no idea what kind of fabric I'm going to use. I’m probably going to have two fabrics layered on top of each other but I still don’t know which ones… can you please help? Also, any pointers would be great:]
Here’s a link to the pic of the dress..[Ignore the creepy mannequin]: http://i31.tinypic.com/nmj86p.jpg
Thank You
Heidi
I think you should use a sheer black fabric (like this http://www.decorativefabricsdirect.com/BLACK_SHEERS_p/682714.html ) layered on top of a silky or satin-type dark grey or black fabric (like this http://www.trimfabric.com/nv-211.html or this http://www.trimfabric.com/nv-135.html ), with a crinoline underneath to make the skirt poofy (sort of like this one http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=6706683 ). Also, it looks like in the picture that the crinoline peeks out under the dress (if that is what the bottom grey layer is), so just make the crinoline longer than the actual skirt. If you don't want to sew with two layers together, then you could use just a satin black fabric and it would look just as good. The mid-section could be achieved by sewing a black ribbon to the bodice all the way around under the breast and at the waist, crossing it in an X pattern, then tying the bow in the middle.

How do you sew using a mannequin?
I love to sew, but I dont like using patterns. I dont know why. But I have a dressmakers mannequin, so I use that and I draw out my own patterns. But how do you use a mannequin to sew? I either get it stuck on the mannequin so it cant come off or somehow it does not fit me in certain places. I thought using a mannequin would allow me to make the perfect size, but maybe I am just not getting exactly how to use it. I have to take the outfit off of it everytime I want to sew (to use the machine) so it feels like it is almost pointless. PLEASE HELP! I would love to make things fit properly, I love design!
No, you don't sew on the mannequin (or do so *very* rarely. If you bought a draping mannequin, one you can pin into, you can drape the garment on the mannequin, mark the seam lines, then take it off and sew. Here's a demonstration of some draping: http://finalfashion.ca/draping-demonstration/
If the mannequin you bought doesn't match your posture and measurements, then the clothes you make with it will never fit you well. Instead, you'll either need a custom mannequin, commercial or homemade (aka duct tape double, though duct tape sags and isn't the best material for a dress form), or you'll need to choose a mannequin in a smaller size and pad it up to match your measurements.
Critical measurements you can't change in most commercial mannequins are shoulder to bust point and back waist length.
