How to make female chest armor?
I'm making a costume and I wanted to incorporate armor but I'm not sure how I would go about actually making the breasts on a chest piece. I've looked at quite a few sources and paper mache seems to be the most reasonable as far as durability and shape flexibility but I don't want to use a balloon as the mold because it's unrealistic. Another source said to use a plastic mannequin that you find at bikini shops but the breast on those might be too small. Also if there is alternative to paper mache that has durability and flexibility please suggest something else.
Use plaster bandage, plaster, and a life model.
You can get the plaster bandage from craft or art supply stores. Just dip pieces of bandage into water and smooth onto the model's breasts. Once the chest plate has hardened you can smooth and reinforce the plate by mixing, brushing, and smoothing small amounts of regular plaster onto the surface.
For a stronger plate, you can layer pieces of metal hardware cloth, burlap, or other hard materials in between multiple layers of plaster bandage. The result will be much stronger, but a bit heavier.
For the life model, I'd suggest finding a friend who has a similar bust size or having a friend put the bandages onto you for the ultimate personalized fit.
I've used this process many times to make masks and other sculptures. The result is pretty lightweight, strong, and durable. The major plus is that its very cheap compared to other methods.
Plastics and metals are expensive and difficult. Paper mache is also cheap and easy, but it will take a long time to harden.
