What exercises can I use to get collection from my horse?
I have a 14hh 18 year old POA mare. She is fairly well broke, very light on her smooth snaffle bit, will walk, trot, and canter nicely etc, but she is not at all collected. She can't back well under saddle because she sticks her face out and hollows her back. Same with pivoting (under saddle). I wanted to teach her to spin, but she cannot go any faster than a slow showmanship speed pivot because she will not round her back and work off her hindquarters. What exercises can I use to get her to collect, round her back, and work off her butt?
While she is 18, she has tons of energy and so far no health problems, arthritis, anything. She wan't really worked very much at all before I got her, so really no old injuries or wear and tear either.
There are lots of ways to get a horse off of his front end and working off of his hind end...I tend to be a little lazy, so I find the easiest and simplest way to make things work, so here is what I do. Begin at a walk, walk down a fence or the side of a barn, stop your horse, back a half step and turn him INTO the fence/barn and continue walking. What you are doing is asking him to choose: Do I want to shift my weight back to my hind end or hit my face on the fence? Doesn't take him long to decide...works every time. Do this at a walk, then a trot, then a canter...well, what do you know, you have your horse's hind end under him and you are riding on a loose rein...it's actually that simple...try it.

I was just wondering what some good exercises are you can do on the ground and during riding that incourages your horse to round his back and become more balanced? Thank you very much!
You have to ride him long and low to achieve this. Don't use side reins, draw reins, martingales, or any of those devices, all of which prevent the muscular devlopment necessary to counteract a hollow back. Use a simple snaffle bit. Use the center of the arena, or long rail if you have a large arena to ride in. You want the horse to carry himself independent of the reins, stretching his neck and relaxing. You only use opening and closing of your fingers on the reins..not to pull the reins at all, but to maintain a gait. Start with a walk, legging him forward and encouraging him to reach his neck forward. Then work at the trot, legging him forward on loose reins, only curling your fingers enough to keep him at a trot. You want him to be reaching his neck and stretching it forward on loose reins. This takes time. You will move with his forward motion, and encourage it with your pelvis, almost scooping it forward with his movement. As you get more forward impulsion, he will begin to bring his quarters beneath himself, and his back will begin to elevate. His muscles and ligaments will be strengthening to support the elevation of his back, and his haunch muscles will be strengthening as he reaches his legs farther under his body. You will begin to feel his forehand elevate, and his up and down movement begin to alter his forward movement. The longitudinal suppling will be developing. He will lower his head naturally as the forehand lifts. Ride him like this day after day, to develop his body strength and suppleness. His conformation will change as you do this, and his hollow back will not look hollow. The topline of his neck will develop correctly, and he will be ready to go on the bit for training him to collect. Any use of devices will develop the wrong neck muscles and interfere with this. This is the only correct and effective way to do this. Use your reins only as much as is needed to maintain him at a trot while you increase your leg cues. Longeing in side reins will not accomplish the same thing, nor will any devices you may be advised to try.
One ground exercise you can do to develop his flexibility at the poll is to bring his nose around to touch his side, rotating his neck. Do it both ways every time you work on it. Pull the lead until he gives to the pressure, release, and then pull it again, directing his nose to his side. Use pulls and releases every time he gives until he is touching his nose to his side. You can use the reins to do this when you ride, before you begin his other exercises. Use one rein, and guide his nose to your toe, both to the left and to the right. This supples the poll laterally and prepares him for the collection he will learn later when he is longitudinally suppled.
