okay i got my mannequin yesterday, and i plan to make a dress?
i want to make one no one else has made. do i have to make my own pattern?
You don't have to, but it's usually easier to incase something goes wrong and you have to make it again bigger or whatever.
Or you can just go with the flow and sew everything together!

Question about making shirts and shorts?
I have a shirt and a pair of shorts that I really like, but they're discontinued and I can't find them anywhere. I figured I can just make my own then. I have a sewing machine and vaguely know how to sew, but I think I can do it. Since I don't have a pattern for these two items nor a sewing mannequin, how do I recreate the design? Do I just measure different parts of the item to recreate it? Also, how many yards of fabric will I need for a size S t-shirt and a pair of shorts that go half way down the thigh (I'm 5'4")?
Any chance of a photo of these two items? It might be easiest to adjust a commercial pattern to look like them. That generally requires a little more knowledge of patternmaking than most beginners have, to "see" the underlying pattern, but there are several of us who post here regularly with such knowledge.
Otherwise, you can "knock off" a new pattern like this: http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/4841/copying-complex-garments but you'll either need a pattern very much like it to get the sewing order correct, or you'll need to know how to sew well enough to know the general order of assembly of these types of garments.
Figure 1 length (shoulder to hem) + 1/4 yard for the t shirt, and 2 lengths + 1/4 yard for the shorts -- that's probably a slight overestimate, but it'll get you in the ballpark.
