Explore Montjuic in Barcelona
Barcelona has all kinds of attractions that bring millions to the city every year. Montjuïc is just one of the main sights tourists and locals come to visit, over 200m high this hill has a history of its own as well as a number of interesting things to see and do. Book a holiday in the Spanish city and you'll wonder why you never visited before!
Montjuïc is located in the Sants neighbourhood and occupies a large part of the hill that looks over the port, it offers an abundance of landscaped gardens and lawns, museums and cultural sights, Olympic sites and sports facilities. This is a part of Barcelona where you can learn more about its history and how it has contributed to the spirit of the city.
Barcelona hosted the 1992 Olympics from Montjuïc, the other major event held here was the International Exhibition in 1929. The exhibition was important because of the striking pieces of art and industrial products on display contributed by artists from all over the world as well as local Spanish and Catalan artists. Seen in Montjuïc today is a replica of the 'Pavilion of the German Reich' created by Ludwig Mies van der Roh and noted for its distinctive style, unique and totally different from the more traditional architectural styles around at the time.
The Poble Espanyol, otherwise known as the Spanish Village, was also built in preparation for the exhibition as a fine example of Spanish architecture with more than a hundred buildings of diverse architectural styles representing Spain's different regions. Whilst some have been copied exactly from the original building, such as the entrance gate which is a replica of Puerta San Vicente, others have been designed to highlight a particular architectural technique.
These days the village remains very much as it was originally constructed however, due to the large numbers of tourists it attracts, was revamped in 1988. There are now traditional art workshops located throughout the village with artisans creating glass, paintings, ceramics, embroidery, and other handmade bits and pieces. In the vicinity there are also chic bars, elegant restaurants, shops and even nightclubs. Staying in an apartment in the city centre enables you to visit Poble Espanyol and all the sights it has to offer very easily and discover its delights for yourself.
Castell de Montjuïc is an 18th century monument that can be reached by funicular and cable-lift. Built by the Bourbons to defend themselves it was constructed on top of the ruins of a fort that dates back to 1640, these days it has a military museum located in it. Another beautiful monument to visit is The Sardana which in actual fact is a dance performed by Catalonians - the monument is a striking display of mannequins clad in traditional costume and the whiteness of the statues set against the backdrop of lush green lawns and deep blue Mediterranean sky makes a great photo opportunity.
Designed for the 1992 Olympics the Olympic Ring has the Stadium at its centre offering a superior selection of sports facilities. The curved white Olympic Tower is a masterpiece by the celebrated architect Santiago Calatrava and built as the main communications tower from which the games were reported.
Also thanks to the Olympics the gardens in the area were given a new lease of life. Jardí Botànic is a botanic garden that features more than 2,000 different types of plants focusing mainly on those that flourish in a Mediterranean climate, whilst the Jardins de Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer has a combination of flowers, Water Lillie's and trees. Jardins Joan Maragall is wonderful for a picnic lunch amongst the colourful flowers, flowing fountains and striking statues, and Jardins Laribal offers a cool garden area with lily ponds and views of the Sagrada Família and Torre Agbar.
