The Mind - Vision and Imagination
Human beings are endowed with a number of remarkable faculties. We experience emotion, we relate to our surrounding through our five senses, and we have the ability to think. As Aristotle said "man is a rational animal." These faculties are not only what differentiate us from all other life in the inverse but they also differentiate us from each other.
There are no two people who think the same way in a given situation. And I strongly doubt that anyone would maintain that any two people would have identical emotional reaction to an identical external experience. But this aside, there is an aspect of our cognitive ability that is often times overlooked and as a result is not always appreciated as much as it should be. I'm referring of course to our ability to imagine.
The imagination is a faculty we possess as humans that we employ almost every second of every day. Perhaps the most salient instances of the function of imagination is our conceptions of future events. The very notion of a future does not fit into the logical category of deductive reasoning, deductive reasoning being the strongest aspect of our logical capacities. For something to be deductive it must be absolute, necessary, and certain. According to this definition the concept of the future falls outside its parameters. So who is it that we "know" about this concept called the "future" it is by way of the imagination. Seeing as the future does not exist we need to dream it up as it were, into existence.
The amount of events we plan for in our lives are all essentially based on our conceptions of the future, and anyone who has been putting away funds for their retirement or runs a business knows that most of their time and energy is spend contemplating the future.
This is one instance of the essential employment of our imaginations. But I think it would perhaps be more productive if I were to give a more practical example of the use of our imagination is everyday life.
When you enter a department store one of the first things you will see is a mannequin. It most probably will be a perfect representation of the ideal human figure. It will be a thin mannequin if it is supposed to represent a female and a highly defined mannequin if it is supposed to represent a male. Either way you will see this mannequin wearing the clothing that the store wants you to by, but have you ever asked yourself, what is the purpose of a mannequin? What is the objective of having mannequins in stores at all?
Well, the answer is very simple; it is there to manipulate you imagination! It is there so that you will start to think "if I purchase the clothing then I will look like that" it is a lie of course but I believe it sufficiently demonstrates the use of the imagination. In the first example I gave I have shown how crucial a role our imagination plays in our everyday lives and in the second instance I have shown the way that hi knowledge of the central role of the imagination can really improve revenues if applied correctly.
In conclusion; never underestimate the use of your imagination.
