Cranium Skull
Cranium Skull
Does the human skull and/or cranium change dimensions as we age into our 40's and up?

Face and skull bones do continue to grow throughout life - the growth occurs at much slower rates than the embryonic skull and may therefore be ignored under most circumstances.

Most of the changes to the skull during life are due to remodeling processes. This process will be most apparent around the alveolar process - the portion of the jawbone that contains the teeth and the alveoli in which they are suspended. As teeth are lost, or worn down, different stress patterns are created. This will cause the skull to remodel in way that will be much more obvious than the changes that are occurring due to growth. Hence, the face is continually remodelled and displaced. Facial growth is dynamic and always changing over time (i.e. skull sizes are different at different ages). It continues throughout life and the rate of change decreases over time.

But maybe this part is the most relevant to your question. The sutures tend to fuse as we get older - a synostosis - so that basically prevents the cranium from changing dimensions.

Cranial Nerve Openings In Skull

In the skull, why are the sphenoid and ethomoid bones listed as single bones?

When they both appear to be paired--(one on each side of the cranium). Also, if you don't mind, Why is the sphenoid bone considered internal when it looks to be on the outside of the skull?
To loz03041985, Thank you for that bit of information. I am attempting to get into the radiology program in my area, and I just started my anatomy.
In the atlas that goes with the tora edition, it looks like a moth butterfly

The ethmoid bone is a bone of spongelike appearance located in the midline in the anterior part of the cranial floor medial to the orbits. It forms the anterior portion of the cranial floor, the medial wall of the orbits, and the superior portion of the nasal septum. It sounds like your getting confused with the frontal bones (these are paired and lie left and right to the ethmoid)

And sounds like you have the temporal bones confused with the Sphenoid, the sphenoid is best described as a bat with outstreched wings. The sphenoid is internal as its in the centre of all the other bones joining them together. The vohmer, which is part of the temporal bone does lie medial to the sphenoid in some diagrams but that is on an inferior view, it does not seperate the bone. The sphenoid joins anteriorly with the frontal bone, laterally with the temporal bones, and posteriorly with the occipital bone.
