Why do llamas nibble at your hand sometimes and How can you get an antisocial female llama to like you?
I have a male llama who is very social and curious but sometimes I think he is too curious because he will siff my hands and take my finger into his mouth and gently nibble at it. It does not hurt at all but I still think it is an odd thing to do. Also, how can I get my female to be more friendly and allow me to put her on a lead?
The male llama was probably given treats by hand in the past and that's why he's checking out your hands....hoping for a treat! It doesn't sound like he's being agressive but male llamas that have been mishandled in the past can be dangerous and agressive it's best not to allow that kind of behavior. Giving treats by hand to llamas, especially males, is not recommended because it can bring on that kind of behavior. Tap (not hit) him on the nose when he tries to nibble on you to teach him that this is not acceptable. He needs to learn to respect your space. I like my llamas to allow me to approach them, but to not approach me unless I ask them to. Agressive llamas can be dangerous so make sure you watch him for any other signs that he may be getting aggressive towards people (spitting, screaming, rearing up, charging at or bumping into people are all things to watch for).
The female's behavior is typical for a llama. They are usually stand-offish, especially if you have not had her for very long. The way we handle new llamas until they get to know us is to give them a handful of grain daily (in a bucket) until they learn to trust us. We stay as close as they will tolerate while they are eating, occasionally reaching out and touching the llama gently with the back of our hand and quickly removing our hand before the llama has a chance to be scared and take off. After they accept that we move on to the catch pen, which is a small pen where we can get the llama into a corner and put an arm around her neck firmly. They will try to pull away but only for a few seconds. They give in pretty quickly once they realize they are caught. Then we put a halter and lead on and work on leading. To teach we put pressure on the llamas head by pulling the rope, as soon as the llama makes any indication of giving in to the pressure (moving forward) we release the pressure and give them a break for a few seconds. The break is the "reward" for doing what we ask. Llamas are very fast learners and we can usually halter break one in a matter of hours. They quickly learn that if they follow you while they are on the lead rope, that they won't get pulled on.
Another way for training llamas is to use a round pen (like horse trainers use) if you have one available. This is a very good method where you teach the llama to move where you want it to before you even put a halter on it.
My daughter started training daughters when she was 11, so it's not difficult and it's something anybody can do.
Once you have them leading you can teach llamas all kinds of things. We teach ours to tolerate grooming, toenail clipping, and shots. We also teach them to tolerate wearing costumes and to behve in the show ring and do an obstacle course. These are both classes in llama shows at fairs, and it's something fun that you can do with a llama.
All llamas should be at the very least trained to halter and lead so that routine grooming and vet work can be done without too much trouble.
