Where can I get a mannequin?

I'm trying to start up on something like fashion design, and I'm really short on cash, so I can't afford a mannequin that's 100$. Believe it or not, that's what my friend got one for in Downtown. I'm not allowed to drive all the way to downtown, and my parents won't even give me that kind of money to "pursue my stupid dreams". It's an asian thing, I guess. So I have no idea where I can get a mannequin. I thought maybe I could ask around stores that were closing down or something for their semi-broken mannequins... but I realized that most of them have the plastic/metal type of mannequins, and not the kind that I can actually stick pins in. Anyone have suggestions? :O

Your actually right, if you're LUCKY you'll find mannequins for $100 PLUS shipping on top of that. I bought a mannequin from here for $100 with free shipping:

I know you said you don't $100 for a mannequin but my advice is don't go for cheap ones since the cloth on cheap mannequins will end up ripping within 3 weeks or so (at least that's what happened to me with my first cheap priecd mannequin). Save and then buy one.

If you're in the Atlanta, GA region then I can sell you one of mine for $85. I understand how hard it is to pursue one's own dreams without the support of parents.

mannequins and sewing question?

what ajustable mannequinn is best for the beginner thats wont get stuck and wont fall over. Also, one that is reasonably priced and good quality and one that can be used on a daily basis.

do you reccomend any beginner sewing books for someone who has taken a quilting class but wants to learn the ropes on sewing clothes.

I believe you said you wore size 3-- that mannequin is for sizes 10-16. Also mannequins of that style can't be pinned into, which makes them useless for draping. The foam-filled dressforms or a "duct tape double" form can give you pinnable surfaces, as will a commercial papier mache non-adjustable form.

I'm not thrilled with particleboard furniture, and wouldn't buy the setup there. I'd give you an office chair that you can set to keep your feet square on the floor, and a table surface of a height that will put your hands at needleplate level when your upper arms are
straight up and down by your sides and your elbows are bent at 90 degrees. That's an ergonomic position for sewing. Cheapest solution for that is probably one of the plastic-topped folding tables with several height adjustments for the legs -- see http://www.amazon.com/Lifetime-22942-4-Foot-Adjustable-Folding/dp/B0002QZ2H8 for an example.

For books, I'd send you to Connie Crawford's Guide To Fashion Sewing, which is the beginning sewing textbook written for FIDM students. It's pretty complete and pretty understandable, lots of good illustrations, very step by step.

  1. I really like the "His Mannequin" look #8 out of 10. Good luck with your movie, it sounds really great!
