is it normal for a dog to get nasty with age?

firstly, my dog is around 12 years old, housetrained, good with kids/ cats etc. a collie cross. however over the past few weeks i have noticed he is a lot greyer around the face and he sleeps alot, i have also been thinking that he is starting to go deaf as he does not respond aswell as he used to.. the last week i have been packing and slowly moving things into a new house. today my dog got out, usually he would come back in after a few shouts of' jack ..in ' but today he turned on me ,growling and trying to bite me as i tried to pick him up to get him in.my arm is full of deep sore srcatches. i have picked him up in the past and it has not bothered him atall. could this be to him getting old? or stress of things being moved out of the house.i am worried he will turn on one of my 4 small children.any suggestions?

It sounds as if he is sick or in pain. I would take him to a vet first and fast, especially if he has already injured you. I would also lock him in a place that is away from the children in the meantime, but don't just forget that he's there. Keep him watered, fed, and give him something he is familiar with of yours to sleep on (an old sweater, shirt, something with your scent) to keep him from getting too upset.

I strongly recommend a vet visit first, because if he is ill or injured, or has swallowed something that is lodged in his stomach, he will need treatment. Another problem larger dogs seem to get is twisted stomachs/intestines. We have had dogs that have done that. None of these things can be cured at home, but any of them can cause him to react in a negative, defensive manner like attacking you when you went to lift him. It doesn't necessairly mean he is mean, or will do it again, but more that he reacted to being injured or hurt.

Finally, though, we did have a dog that got a doggy version of alheizmers, or that is what we called it. She would be sweet and loving one second, and then snarling and growling the next. We took her to the vet numerous times and found nothing physically wrong. He believed it was mental. Animals can suffer from senility, too. We waited too long and she actually bit my nephew. We had to have her put to sleep.

So, my advice, lock him away from others until you get a vet to further diagnose his problem, and then discuss options with the vet on what to do from there.
