Is it worth the money for a direct sales company?
I know you have to put quite a bit of money into direct sales companies like Party Lite, Home&Garden, Pampered Chef, etc. Is it really worth it after you pay for the starter kit, catalogs, postage, and gifts at shows?
WIth anything you have to spend money to make money. I believe in the long run it is definitely worth it though. My wickless candle company's starter kit is only 99$ and you get the catalogs, order forms, 80 Scent Testers, a warmer, wax bar, car candle, room spray and more!
Our shipping is free on party orders of 150$ or more, which is very easy to do. And even if you don't get 150$ in sales the shipping is only 10% of the order. WIth shipping costs these days that is an awesome deal.
I'd say find something that you are interested in already- if you like to cook try Pampered Chef, if you love to decorate and scenting your home try a candle company. This way the rewards are even greater, it's much easier to sell something that you believe in!!!

If a direct sales person approaches you in public how do you feel?
I have been in direct sales since February. I'm having a hard time getting started because of unsupportive friends / family. Someone suggested that I talk to people in the grocery store or walmart or something. What would your reaction to that be? I'm a bit nervous about just going up to a complete stranger and asking them to look at a catalog and letting me call them, or to set up a home show or something. Any ideas?
You don't just walk up to them and ask them to look. You start a conversation and steer the conversation towards what you do. You upline should be teaching you this stuff. Either your company doesn't have a good system or you are not plugging into that system. If it's the latter you need to plug into that system an get trained. If they don't have a good system and you aren't getting support from your upline find a different company.
If you approach correctly it won't seem akward to the other person. Personally I love when direct sellers or anyone for that matter approach me. People need my service even if they aren't interested in the biz opp. I listen to their presentation and then show them mine. They usually aren't interested in biz opp, but want the service. Some times they realize that what I'm doing is much better than what they are doing and join.
