Do I need a drawing dummy?
I'm interested in buying a drawing dummy (mannequin, lay figure...a wooden dummy for drawing). So I want to know; is it useful? Does it really help you draw or can you draw just as good without it? And do I need both, male and female or is it enough if I buy just one? Is there a big difference between the two or can you use one for drawing both sexes?
You certainly can use one to draw both sexes, but...
Yes they are useful. The Human Figure is a complex object. Figuring perspective and so forth can be quite difficult. Mannequins have roughly the proportions of the human figure and can help you figure out what the relative sizes of things will be in the final shape. Actual human proportions vary though from five to seven and a half heads tall (a few people are eight heads), They come in two models, male and female. Individual proportions do vary though and frankly they vary enough (I mean women have different breast sizes if nothing else) so you might as well choose whichever you are more comfortable with and do without the other.
I know of no one by the way who uses them who didn't go through a period after they started of thinking maybe they aren't so useful -- for extreme positions they aren't. But the fact is the first thing we try to do when we draw is get the basic shape down and they definitely match our shapes and provide flexibility to show how they change from various positions.
