Sewing a sock out of flat fabric?

Disabled relative with diabetes needs a sock that goes over the cast to completely cover the foot. Then I can insert formed foam at the end to protect his toes from injury. I bought some rib knit to make this but wondered if anybody knew of a link that shows you how to do it. I do knit socks, but have never made one out of a flat fabric.

This should not be difficult and you may be able to make the cover without a pattern.

Measure the cast for length and circumference. Add 1" to the circumference for the seam; 1" for a hem and add in whatever you need for the thickness of the foam. If the foam is 2" thick and 3" long (toe to leg and not side to side) add 1/2 the thickness to the length: 4".

Seam up the long side. Reposition so the seam is at the center back. Seam across the toe and make a hem at the top for stability.
