Durable Brazilian Body
ATC Taekwondo Hapkido and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Alright, to the point. There's a dojo near my home and it offers traditional and olympic taekwondo, Hapikido and Brazillian jiu jitsu. What can I expect from the different arts and what the difference between olympic and traditional taekwondo? Which is the best art. Also, what is ATC all about? Are they mcdojos or do they actually provide some aid in self defense? Down below are some of things I want in an art. Please base the answer on what's mentioned.
I'm practically 15, 5'9 inches, 175 pounds (that's majority of muscle as I have a muscular body build.) I have great leg power and considerable arm strength. I'm pretty calm in most situation even violent ones. I'm flexible and I'm durable. I want a practical art. I think of myself as a striker, but peers have viewed me as a grappler so I want an art that is balanced. That includes striking, dodging, grappling etc. This includes an art that emphasizes strength, aglity etc... as well, but also emphasizes on technique as well.
olympic tkd well if your not really looking for practical fighting go for it. as the name states its the tkd you see in the olympics flashy kicks not too much punching learned focused on scoring points more points being awarded for a kick oppose to a punch and a head kick than a body kick and a jump kick than a regular kick. you are stopped by the ref after scoring a point. so pretty much you wear a lot of padding you win off of points you are awarded more points for the flashier the kick looks. traditional tkd is modeled more off of self-defense
olympic tkd=sport traditional=self-defense
tkd being a good art if taught by a good instuctor has unforturantely due to some incompetent and money hungry people have given most tkd a mcdojo scent lingering in the air
hapkido(korean hard and soft) is kinda like a mix of tangsoodo(korean hard style[striking]) and taekwondo(korean hard style[striking]) and a aikido(japanese soft[using the aggressor's force and momentum against them]) other than that i dont know too much about this art
and brazilian jiujitsu what can i say other than its the most common ground/grappling art that mma people train in.
if i had to pick from those three to be "balanced" hapkido has the striking and the grappling. but most people find a balance from cross training and the most popular styles to cross train in to achieve your balance is: boxing, thai boxing, judo, wrestling, brazilian jiujitsu
notice i said the most popular and not the best because if you can find a good striking art and grappling art you'll be in pretty good shape. maybe something like kempo and aikido suits your best.
there are a few "hybrid arts" that are a product of cross training and teach you some aspects or striking and grappling all in one such as jeet kune do, krav maga, pencak silat, san soo, etc...

The Concerns About Brazilian Hair Straightening
Traditional Brazilian Straightening Treatments, and its newest variation, the Brazilian Keratin Treatment are the latest wave of cosmetic treatments for hair to hit salons and parlors all over the globe. It cost less and is faster than traditional Japanese straightening methods, and with more instant results, it has quickly become the treatment of choice for many women (and some men) in search of that perfect straight chic look.
In recent times, this form of hair treatment has come under a massive amount of speculation from all corners. Suffice to say there are many concerns regarding the techniques and elements involved in the treatment. This article discusses some of these concerns.
Traditional Brazilian Straightening Treatment
In this method, the hair is softened using a 'formaldehyde' solution and a steaming flat iron is used to apply the solution into the hair for a lasting effect. The primary concern raised by critics is that this formaldehyde solution uses compounds that are known 'carcinogens'. The trouble arises when these carcinogens are released into the air in the form of fumes when the steaming iron is applied to the hair while applying the solution. It is believed that the fumes are harmful when inhaled by the individual and stylist.
Here it is important to remember that formaldehyde is a naturally occurring substance and can be found in many manmade products in this day and age. Critics say formaldehyde found in these manufactured goods do not decompose as quickly under normal settings and are thus not released rapidly into the environment. Proponents of the treatment point out that formaldehyde can be broken down more quickly under heat and a level of moderate humidity, therefore causing the chemical to release quicker.
The criticism remains though. The formaldehyde chemical does not release quickly and so there is concern for people who undergo the Brazilian straightening treatment. The chemical cannot be easily washed out in a few shampoo washings, as a result`f the chemical may accumulate on the scalp and hair over a period of time, releasing on every wash, there is a fear of long term exposure.
The Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT)
In comparison to its traditional namesake, the BKT technique does not employ any strong chemicals in the process. Nor does it involve the excess use of the same. Unlike other techniques of hair straightening, the treatment does not open and close hair cuticles in an attempt to straighten them, which often results in the damaging of the hair shafts. A primary substance used in the process is Keratin. Keratin is a naturally occurring substance. The application of Keratin repairs internal damage to the hair and also serves to form a protective layer effectively preventing damage in the future.
Keratin is a protein based compound. It is high in sulpher and an amino acid called cystine. This makes Keratin highly durable and insoluble as well as being extremely elastic. It is interesting to know that Keratin forms the foundation for animal body parts such as horns and wool. In human beings it forms protective covering for body parts such as skin, nails and hair.
What Are the Risks and Who All Are At Risk?
· Some people have a natural sensitivity to formaldehyde chemical. Others may develop an allergy to formaldehyde over prolonged periods of exposure during the treatment; as it is in the characteristics of the chemical to cause relations in the immune system of the body. Even low levels of exposure to it can cause itching, irritation in the eyes, runny noses and sore throats
· Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Therefore people with compromised lung functions, bronchitis and severe allergies are at the greatest risk. It is also advisable for smokers to avoid this chemical as it has been known to cause cancers of the nasal passage and airways
· Women who are pregnant or are nursing mothers should NOT undergo this treatment
