Form and Content of African Music $119.48 Technological products, growth of urban centres, emergence of industries and the widespread of deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS have led to remarkable adjustments in the social behaviour and other ways of life in African communities. These adjustments have strained sociocultural patterns of African traditional ceremonies leading to a shift in the form, content, significance and performance of music in such ceremonies. This work investigates the form and content of African music as exemplified by Bukusu circumcision music, in Kenya. The dilemma and problem in the Bukusu community focuses on striking a balance between the traditional and modern perspectives in the organization and performance of the music. The author identifies, investigates and explains various forms, meanings and functions of Bukusu circumcision music against the backdrop of modernity. This documentation is an evaluation model of the past, present and future perspectives of African traditional music(s). The book is highly recommended for scholars, students and researchers in ethnomusicology, African music, music education, and methodology in sociocultural studies at universities and other tertiary institutions. Author: Wanyama, Mellitus Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 148 Publication Date: 2009/02/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.34 inches |

African Symphony $53.48 Written in the 1970s, the authors African stories have lost none of their charm, immediacy and powers of transformation. Immersing himself in the everyday life of natives and immigrants, men and women of all walks of life, Kupelian was exposed to the primal energies, the ancient customs and superstitions that dominated as much the virgin forests as the fast, sprawling urban jungles. Kupelians first three collections of short stories form a lush, unfettered chronicle of self discovery. Like Gide, Hemingway and Green before him, he constructed narratives of profound insight and sensitivity, working against the metaphysical backdrop of the New Africa. Kupelians heroes represent the spectrum of West African society; from the sandsand boys and domestic helpers to the president of the republic and civil servants, from the underage murderer and illicit diamond dealer to the primeval fishermen, the sophisticated scholar of ancient Greek and golf club guru, these are the characters that allow Kupelian to depict the daily struggles, but also the complex interracial relations, prejudices and hatred that suffuse the continent. Author: Kupelian, Raymond Boghos Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 112 Publication Date: 2006/01/01 Language: English Dimensions: 11.00 x 8.50 x 0.29 inches |

West African Migrations (Hardcover) $179.16 Drawing on the interdisciplinary research projects of scholars from various social science and humanities disciplines, this book explores how African migration to Western countries after the neo-liberal economic reforms of the 1980s transformed West African states and their new transnational populations in Western countries. Collectively, their contributions offer an analysis of how the interplay of social, political, economic, and cultural forces have shaped the nature and form of transnationalization. |

Postnationalist African Cinemas (Hardcover) $154.5 Postnationalist African Cinemas convincingly interrogates the ways in which African narratives locate postcolonial identities and forms beyond essentially nationalist frameworks. It investigates how the emergence of new genres, discourses and representations, all unrelated to an overtly nationalist project, influences the formal choices made by contemporary directors. By foregrounding the narrative, generic, discursive, representational and aesthetic structures of films, this book shows how directors are beginning to regard film as a popular form of entertainment rather than political praxis. |

African Crisis: Is There Hope? $89.73 The goal of this book is to provide practical solutions to save Africa and its people from an African crisis that is threatening to destroy the nation and eliminate human survival. The author, an African himself, argues that this crisis is manifesting itself in the form of social, political, and economic upheavals. He discusses major issues such as unemployment, famine, hunger, malnutrition, overpopulation, ethnic wars, power struggles, debt, democracy, colonialism, and corruption. He argues that Africa suffers from the exploitation of outsiders. Based on this argument, Muriithi develops a strategic approach for developing Africa and bringing hope to its people. The study promotes that the three key determinants of African development are positive change in its society and culture, its demography, and its economy. The author suggests that through organization, discipline, education, and coalition, such changes can be made. African Crisis: Is There Hope? will serve as an appropriate text in African Studies courses focusing on the nations problems, development, economy, and third world crises. This detailed and reflective work will also appeal to students and scholars alike, politicians, African development agents, donors, and world leaders. Author: Muriithi, Samuel M. Now South Africa is truly Fucked!
what form of foundation is best for combo/oily african american skin. (creme, liquid, or powder)?
I am prone to breakouts and most days I am oily but some days i am dry so what is a good foundation for my skin type.
I recommend you first consider your skin care routine - you may want to change your moisturizer (yes, even folks with oily skin should use a moisturizer). There are some oil-free mattifying solutions available. Murad has a decent (a little pricey, but it is very good) moisturizer as part of the Acne Solution line.
Creme foundations- they have a tendency to clog pores and to run/rub off. The only one that didn't do this for me was one of the 'whipped' foundations, but it tended to be drying in the drier spots of my face.
Some liquid/powder foundations work well, but again, it depends on your skin's reaction. I had some success with Neutrogena, but then it began to dry some areas of my face - mostly due to the medication in the foundation (it had salysilic acid in it, but it was a little too concentrated for my skin).
I've found mineral foundation to work better than regular powders. You may want to keep some blotting papers with you (you can usually find them at any drug store), for some spots that may get a little shiny. One thing many mineral brands have is a finishing powder. These often appear white, but are translucent when brushed on. This helps absorb oil and sets the makeup well, without adding more color.
I've tried a couple of different brands of mineral powders, it really is personal preference and what is budget-friendly for you, they generally work the same. The main thing is to find the correct shade(s) for you, and you will be fine.
Best of luck!
