What is the best form of self defense of 41 year old who is about 6 foot tall, 14 stone and not very fit.?

To clarify, I live in the UK and handguns are not legal.

For (unarmed) self defense I almost always recommend Krav Maga, with a few modifications:

1. Krav Maga emphasizes punching in defense; this isn't a good idea unless you already have strong/conditioned hands. You can do a lot of the same strikes with palm strikes.
2. Fitness isn't important for self defense, but strength can make a difference, and improving your condition can help you feel better about your life. Do what you can to improve your overall condition -- especially strength.
3. In a one-on-one brawl where weapons aren't involved and you don't want to seriously injure the other person, it is hard to beat good grappling skills. These aren't taught in Krav Maga. You'll need to look at a good jujitsu, grappling or wrestling program to gain them.
4. Carry some kind of improvised weapon. ANY weapon can make a huge difference in a conflict.

I'm about your same size, weight and age, so I understand some of the problems we "older types" run into. But it you do the above, you'll be as well equipped as anyone for most self defense situations.

Don't be confused by popular martial arts and sport programs that claim that they teach self defense. They don't. What they teach can be ADAPTED to be used for self defense, but it is really designed for sport, demonstration, or maybe dueling against a single person under set rules. In this I'm referring to basically anything that would fall under the terms karate or tae kwon do. Others like aikido are also often recommended for self defense, but they really only work on compliant opponents.

There are some very important things to look out for on your training and conditioning, especially given your age and condition. Otherwise you are very likely to be injured by the training, itself. See my web site for details -- look at the articles on physical conditioning. Briefly:

1. Start low and proceed slowly. Don't push too hard. It has taken you many years to get to your current condition. It will take months to turn it around.
2. Never do muscle-fatiguing calisthenics or deep stretching BEFORE training. Do them afterward.
3. Do joint and muscle-conditioning dynamic movements BEFORE training to warm up. Every joint, head to toe.
