What's a good dress form?

im interested in getting a dress form. are the adjustable ones any good? i saw the Dritz one at joanns the other day. im a beginner at sewing but i catch on really quick and i can understand how clothes are made pretty well. i designed my own collection and i wanna make it but i cant find any patterns that are similar enough. plus i wanna make it from scratch. so what a good, not too expensive dress form?

also id be able to make clothes without a pattern right? i like playing around with fabric, thats how i get most ideas.

lastly, would it be better for me to make one of those DIY duct tape dress forms tailored to my body? i guess the plus size is it would be perfect for me but can you actually pin into them? /: what if i put muslin over it? would that do anything? or am i better off buying a real one?

I had a Dritz (adjustable) and it held up for well over 10 years...Singer has one as well...they are probably very similar....find one with 12 dials, so it gives you more play. They are on sale online thru Joann's but the site has been down ALL weekend!! Also, try thrift stores, freecycle.com, garage sales (that's where I got mine for 20 bucks!) etc.. its worth the money spent!

You can pad out a dress form, too...using batting, shoulder pads, cookies, etc and cover it with muslin and secure with pins. If you plan on making clothes for others, consider a smaller size because you can always make it bigger padding it out.

I have never made a duct tape dress form. Could be fun, but time consuming.

Yes, you can make clothes with out a pattern per se....its called 'draping' -- draping helps you create to a pattern, if you plan on making more than 1 piece, you'll want a pattern...there are books out there that can help you. You can also use a "sloper" or a basic pattern and alter the pattern to suit your design. It can save a lot of time...
