Dressmaker Form
Help novel: The best period of time in England?
I'm really struggling to choose a period of time in which to base my story. I want the main form of women's clothing you wear, so before women began to wear jeans and such. She is a dressmaker / seamstress, as is his caregiver. I want to still be a time of knights and the lady has not so far behind as 1600. I know this should not be so difficult but I'm dead! If you have any idea I'm looking for a lifespan of 85 years for her. If yield also describe the main events during this period of time that would be great. Thanks!
It sounds to me like you're looking either at the 18 th century or 19 to set his story in. Do not know much about the 18 th century, but I made a complete course in the 19 th century in Britain so I'll list all the events I know since then: 1801 - Act of Union, joining Great Britain and Ireland, comes into force. 1804 - Napoleon is crowned emperor of France. 1807 - Slave trade made illegal by the British. 1812-1815 - War between Britain and the U.S.. 1815 - Napoleon defeated at Waterloo, end of the Napoleonic war. The Congress of Vienna, attended the Las great powers, redraw the map of Europe. 1816 - Year Without a Summer: Unusually cold wreak havoc across the Northern Hemisphere, likely caused by the explosion Mount Tambora in 1815. 1820 - More "liberal" Tories, including Robert Peel and George Canning, there are very important positions in government. Several social and economic reforms, therefore made, as the reforms of the Penal System (eg, improve prison conditions, paying guards, etc.) and the establishment of the Police Force Metropolitan. July Revolution - 1830 France. 1830 - The Belgian Revolution in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands led to the creation of Belgium. 1832 - The Great Law Reform of 1832 was enacted extending the vote to men of middle-class landowner, although the working class are still without voting rights. 1833 - Abolition of Slavery Act prohibition of slavery in the British Empire. 1834 - Poor Law amendment eliminates external assistance (eg, money or goods given by the parish to the poor) and fed more workhouses. These are terrible conditions and are used to deter people from becoming poor. 1837-1901 - the reign of Queen Victoria is considered the apex British Empire and is known as the Victorian era. 1841 - Robert Peel becomes Prime Minister. More social and economic reforms continue. 1844 - First telegraph line public funds in the world - between Baltimore and Washington - sends message on 24 May demonstration, advertising in the era of the telegraph. 1845-1849 - Great Famine in Ireland. Thousands starve or emigrate to places like the U.S.. 1851 - The Great Exhibition in London was the world's first international Expo or World's Fair. 1853-1856 - Crimean War between France, the United Kingdom, the Ottoman Empire and Russia. 1861-1865 - Civil War Secession from the Union and Confederate. 1866 - Austro-Prussian War results in the dissolution of the German Confederation and the creation of the North German Confederation and the Austrian-Hungarian Dual Monarchy. 1869 - Suez Canal opens, linking the Mediterranean the Red Sea. 1871-1914 - Second Industrial Revolution in Britain. Long Depression - 1870-90 in Western Europe and North America. 1880-1881 - First War Boers. 1882 - The British invasion and subsequent occupation of Egypt. 1883 - Krakatoa volcano explosion. 1888 (August) - Jack the Ripper is believed to have begun killing. 1888 (November) - Jack the Ripper is believed to have killed his last victim. 1896 - Olympic games revived in Athens. 1899-1902 - Second Boer War. 1901 - Death of Queen Victoria. I'm writing a novel set in this period too, and I know from experience that having some knowledge of the events of the age does not help. However, it is all very well know world events, but what about average life, day by day for people at a time? To find out about it, you should read the books written during that time. For example, if you want to know what life was like for the poor throughout the 19 th century then read books by Charles Dickens. Other writers include the Brontë sisters, Jane Austen, Lewis Carroll and Arthur Conan Doyle. Well, I hope that helps!
