Why did white humans change pigment over the whole body?
Black humans lost the pigment away from the tropics to form vitamin D from sunlight. However the area was colder so they needed clothes. So why lose the pigment from the covered parts as it has no advantage, Only the exposed parts needed to change.
Well, evolution isn't that smart...
Your skin is made up of the same type of epithelial cell that originated from a cell type in the developing organism when it was only a few cells large. The mutation that allowed the loss of pigment is in the genome, which all cells possess, and the specific genes for pigment are only expressed in the epithelial cells. So the precursor epithelial cell is expressing, or not expressing some gene causing it to not produce the pigment. This would be found in ALL cells then that come from that epithelial cell precursor. Therefore ALL epithelial cells are expressing the SAME genes, and thus ALL epithelial cells are pigmented or not...
If say you had two different type of epithelial cells, one that is on your exposed parts and one that is covered by clothing you could see a change in colors.
Or, if a molecular mechanism existed to turn off pigment when suns were exposed to moderate level of light in order to produce VitD you may see that occur. But these adapted changes are acted on by the same forces that cause the evolution of species, and there was no adaptive force to cause the change...
You do see pigment changes in other animal epithelial cell. Take a look at your dog or cat for instance. But these were most likely caused by an adaptive force pushing for camouflage... which is different than the force that caused the loss of pigment (the adaptive benefit of producing VitD when pigment protection was no longer needed)
